Solve the Clues

The Treasure Hunt begins. We will be posting clues on this web site with a slight delay from when they are released in the wild! You will be able to move from clue to clue more quickly by picking up the complete instructions and clue sheets at one of our Sponsor's stores.

This year's 19th Ward Treasure Hunt involves determining  digits based on locations from Clues 1-4 which will provide the combination to a lock on a Treasure Box whose location is given in Clue 5.  {For more detailed instructions see below the clues.} Also check the Weblog, as additional hints for the clues will be posted there from time to time.

Clue 1:
  • Down the street from where the crush of wounded Union blue once lay,
  • A monument to this Congressman and Judge still stands today.
  • Part of a system that is thirty-five hundred strong,
  • This location is the Treasure Hunt starting point for a journey hard and long.
Clue 2:
  • As Kansas City boasts of 12th Street & Vine, and 42nd and Broadway in NYC
  • Our neighborhood has intersections that stand out in history.
  • At this juncture Hitler’s effigy is burned on VE Day;
  • And still marks our commitment to peace across from where we save or spend our pay.
Clue 3:
  • Piccadilly Circus isn’t as far as we might think
  • From belov’d Hunt’s Hardware, the West End was just a blink.
  • In the middle of the valley this “factory of dreams”
  • Was entered in with ticket price and filled with many scenes.
Clue 4:
  • This Titanic shipping line’s disaster made the books;
  • Its namesake’s home was the club and claim of Micah Brooks.
  • Close by the home where Mackey put a part of old St. Pat’s,
  • This historic site – both good and bad – still earns a tip of the hat.
Clue 5:
  • Eastman’s gift is clear to see – it’s such a lovely view,
  • Susan B. spent quite a bit and opened it up, too.
  • We do not ask you walk their path: for this refuge is our aim.
  • For homeless children loved and reared, journey’s end and end of game.

Instructions

In the 19th Ward is hidden a large metal container with a lock around it. In this container are 100 Keys. If you find the container, take one key.  Again take only one key and leave the others. Put the container back just as you found it.  Take your key to Square Fair on Saturday June 7th.  If your key opens the lock you can pick from one of the prizes.  If your key does not open one of the locks, turn it in to be eligible for a raffle for additional prizes.  Any unclaimed prizes will be added to the raffle to be held at 3:00 pm.  Square Fair is held at Aberdeen Square, on Aberdeen Street between Post and Woodbine Avenues.

To find the hidden treasure you need to collect information from throughout the 19th Ward and then solve the following puzzles. Good luck! To solve each clue, you may need to browse the web, hit the library, ask long time residents, or visit some of our sponsors. Each of the clues leads you to the address of a notable 19th Ward location. The first number of the street address of the locations that are linked to Clues 1-4 provide you with the needed code to unlock the Treasure box that is hidden at the location linked to Clue 5.  As an example if the location of Clue 1 was 508 Genesee Street, 5 would be the first number of the code you will need to unlock the treasure hunt box. By the time you solve Clues 1-4 you will have a four digit combination that will open the lock on the treasure hunt box. The treasure hunt box is hidden but still visible and easily accessible, although under a wooden structure.   { 2 5  5 3 }
